POSITION TITLE: Community Recreation Director DEPARTMENT: SHPS Athletic Department DIVISION: Non-Union SUPERVISOR: Athletic Director STATUS: Part-time up to 29 hrs per week, Year Round Pay Rate $50,000 Per Year FLSA exempt GENERAL PURPOSE Responsible for developing, planning, organizing, and supervising recreational programs for community use, which may include preschool programs, youth programs, adult programs, senior citizen programs, after school programs, day camps, summer camps, athletics, aquatics, cultural arts, enrichment classes, and special events. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ● Coordinates with local youth club and organizational leaders to support facility scheduling, supplies, and management, registration systems, and other administrative activities. ● Leads community recreational fundraising efforts for local youth league support and works with program leadership to allocate and distribute funds. ● Creates a community recreational website to include youth league information and sign up, schedules, contact information, etc. ● Creates and maintains an operational plan and policies/procedures for efficiently managing parks, properties, staff, volunteers, partnerships, etc. ● Conducts a comprehensive assessment of the community’s recreation needs and interests across all ages and demographics. ● Cooperates with the City of South Haven, South Haven Township, South Haven Public schools and the South Haven Area Recreation Authority to create a 3-year plan of goals, objectives and deliverables related to community recreational needs and programming. ● Monitors program participation and feedback, using data to assess program effectiveness. ● Develops public relations strategies, and actively promotes participation through effective marketing and outreach by creating and publishing related communications through a variety of communication channels, including social media, flyers, newsletters, and websites. ● Actively engages with citizens, community groups, various boards and commissions, and other community stakeholders. Attends various meetings and makes presentations to promote recreational programming and update progress against goals and objectives. ● Supports local parks department leadership and staff by reporting concerns related to park maintenance, safety, and/or accessibility. ● Frequent contact requires courtesy, discretion, and sound judgment. 1 ● Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Business Administration, or a related field. Related work history may be substituted for formal degree. Pass background check required of new South Haven Public Schools employees. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: ● Minimum of three to five years’ of experience in recreation program management, including supervisory responsibility. ● Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. ● Ability to work various shifts in order to meet program needs. ● Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. ● Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Workspace. ● Experience in grant writing and fundraising is preferred. ● Ability to engage diverse community groups and foster inclusive programming. LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION Valid State of Michigan driver’s license and good driving record. Certification in CPR, First Aid, and/or AED is preferred. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED This position utilizes a variety of office equipment, including but not limited to, desktop computer, telephone, fax machine, copier. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Administrative work generally involves light physical effort. May be required to sit for extended periods of time operating a personal computer. Medium level of physical effort required. Must be able to lift weights up to 50 lbs. May be required to navigate various outdoor recreational fields and/or parks.
